Course Offerings

Here at Manderino Martial Arts we are dedicated. We are primarily dedicated to three things.

1. Mental Education through Martial Spirit and the Chaos of Violence.

2. Personal Education in Sports and Sportsmanship.

3. Physical Education with our Training Methods and Self-Defense.

To meet these goals for the greatest number of people, of diverse backgrounds, we offer carious courses of training. Each course works to achieve the same goal, with a slightly different approach: Traditional course, Grappling Course, Easter Sword Course, and TaiChi/Yoga Course.

Traditional Course:

This is our school's "bread and butter."

The Traditional Course is offered 5 days a week. Enrollment in the course enables you to choose any of those three days and make the most of each workout, each week. The daily 6 pm class is reserved for students that either have Open Access Pass or have enrolled in this course. T and Th are days with classes reserved for both children and adults to separately study. This separation is able to optimize course effectiveness as the teaching style offered is tailored to the target audience. This is not to say that younger or older students cannot learn from each other or each other's pedagogy. This division exists simply to afford the opportunity to the majority of us thatt can use such a structure to optimize from our learning experience.

The Traditional Class only requires the purchase of a uniform to practice in, and sparring gear if students wish to partake in our Wednesday Sparring classes that are part of this course offering. The norm for the class is barefeet. This not only helps to condition the skin of our feet, and their structure, but to also allow use to manipulate the foot in its freedom. Seasoned practitioners learn how to control their foot position and its gripping power. Socks are permitted (but will cost you extra as time goes on and the socks are worn through), but not shoes. The only shoes permitted are dedicated "martial arts" shoes. While I can help these products be found, they are acquired by the student, at the student's own expense.

The Traditional Course makes used of ancient martial arts methods in karate training with applications of the modern science of kickboxing and utilizes new research into physical fitness. This class is a must for understanding the whole range of safety in the face of violence and becoming competent in self-defense and a truly well-rounded fighter. Enroll Now.

The Grappling Course:

The new item.

The Grappling Course is designed by Master Manderino. Drawing from his learning in western wrestling, judo, and bjj, and his years of experience in Football and the Korean Art of Hapkido.

Grappling is a universal term for when two fighters entwine each other- and become extremely close. Here, violence can seem most chaotic. But, with an open mind, the qualities of docility and coach-ability, and the virtue of stick-to-it-iveness, the chaotic may become orderly to any mind.

This course is currently offered Monday and Friday at 5 pm. This course has both limited size and higher start-up costs. Unlike traditional or striking only arts, sparring is a must from the beginning. Even controlled sparring with a partner requires certain safety equipment unique to grappling. First, ear-guards, mouth guards, and rash guards are a must (as well as athletic supporters for men).
While a traditional, lightweight gi may be worn, they are not designed for heavy grappling and may be damaged. If this is not your concern, then feel free to purchase a lightweight gi. If it is, the more durable (and sadly more expensive) gi is your alternative, or rash-guard material. We will study maneuvers mostly suited for no-gi use. But some classes (to be pre-announced during the course) will study the applications of clothing items where a gi will be helpful. It may be good to have a "side" lightweight gi for those days.

Why did you mention football? Though football may be a sport, it fosters both the spirit and the skills that are intrinsic to the martial arts. By my experience, I can offer a unique persepctive that few other martial arts instructors can offer you:

As a lineman, on both sides of the ball, and linebacker, nothing becomes more important than stances, hand placements, and balance. These three elements are fundamental to any grappling experience. The football field offers a setting not easily found elsewhere in the country. The opportunity to safely utilize these skill sets at full speed, both in grappling and striking mix- through training and gameplay. I was fortunate enough to have been coached by men who were able to teach me the game through the martial arts, because of their own martial arts experience and expertise.

I recommend this course to any grappler enthusiast, students wishing to round out their fighting experience, and to football players (especially anyone on the line or in the secondary). This course runs Monday and Friday at 5:05 pm.

For an additional $10 a month a grappler may also gain access to "Open Access" classes at the 6:05 pm slot throughout the week, including the Weds. Sparring, to pick up fundamental striking skill sets. Again, there is LIMITED room, enroll now. Once this class roster is full, new students are placed onto a waiting list to be admitted into class until there are more openings.

The Eastern Sword:

It is my sincere and true hope that at least some select few will take advantage of this course and allow me to continue to offer it. The study of the Eastern Sword (any sword for that matter) is an opportunity for personal growth as a martial artists, a member of society, and in understanding the chaos of violence when handling- or being handled by- a weapon. A unique flavor to say the least.

This course is designed by Master Manderino around the weapons arts. The staple and primary study of this course is Korean Kumdo, a blending of the techniques of the sword, sword sporting, and the deadly art of drawing the sword. There will be opportunities, however, to study other sword styles as well as other weapons related to the study of the sword (such as the study of the middle-sized stick).

This course, like the Grappling Course, has a higher start-up fee than the Traditional Course. It also requires diligent maintenance. It's benefits of training, as well as the by-product of fun, though, are priceless (but not worthless). In order to help mitigate the cost of the course for students (children and adults, alike), the course is being offered for $40 a month, for a limited time (until the school can no longer afford this price or until the class is full). The Course is offered Monday and Friday at 7:05 pm, and, consequently, has a limited class size. Enroll Now!

Tai Chi and Yoga

Wednesday afternoon at 4:05 pm is slated to become our newest course. This course is to be offered on a weekly basis at $3 per class. The class will instruct the students in basic Tai Ch. It will also instruct the studetns in the fundamentals of Yoga. If our size grows large enough, other course times may become available. Please call Master Manderino for questions or concerns.
